South Africa faces a formidable set of challenges, including insufficient housing, high unemployment, violent crime, huge wealth inequality, and a high rate of HIV infection. Many people have been frustrated by the slow pace of change in these and other areas since the transition to majority rule. Many black South Africans want a more effective redistribution of land, wealth, and jobs, while many white South Africans complain that efforts made in redistribution, including the affirmative action policy called Black Economic Empowerment (BEE), keep them out of jobs they are qualified for. Mixed-race people often express a feeling of being left behind or marginalized in new planning. Many mixed-race neighborhoods, especially in Cape Town, face high rates of poverty, drug use, and crime, with little attention being paid to these problems.
Despite these frustrations, the majority of South Africans accept coexistence in their multiracial, democratic society and want to contribute their efforts to building it. Many have a strong sense of identity as a South African. Most people value their new economic opportunities and agree that South Africans must work together to achieve the goals set forth in the constitution and to allow South Africa to capitalize on its natural wealth, strong economy, and diverse peoples.
The sentiment that reciprocity and kindness should reign in human relationships is captured in the Bantu word ubuntu, which describes a philosophy that is related to the Zulu phrase Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu, literally meaning “A person is a person through other people.” Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first post-apartheid president, was a firm believer in ubuntu.
